Getting Back Up to Speed

THE DAY

Which pretty much says it all.

I will try not to dwell on those three big fat goose eggs all in a row.  But what I will say is that I ALWAYS have a hard time getting back up to speed after an interruption or trip.  The funny thing: I always take a laptop because you never know.  But I DO know that I am very bad at working while away unless I know that I have a lot of unbroken time when no one will bother me.  (For example, if the husband wants to go to some conference and drag me along?  Hasn’t happened now for years, but just supposing.  I don’t mind that because so long as I have a carafe of coffee, peace and quiet, a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the hotel door, and a hotel gym…I’m set.  I can do the work.)

But I couldn’t this time around.  The days were filled with family things.  So I just closed my eyes, tried not to look.

Getting started again, though, is just as hard.  Even though I’ve done nothing but think of what I have to write, actually getting back into the swing of the narrative is tough.  Took me several hours this morning.  When I finally got going, I saw that, if I were to stick to my schedule, I ought to be getting up and heading to the pool.

Well, I decided: screw that.  I’m on a roll; I feel the book; it’s time to keep hammering, get back into the groove.

So that’s what I did.  While I did finally stop and go to the pool, I also decided against making dinner and simply brought home something easy and fast so as not to go too crazy.  Thought about the book the whole time I was in the pool, too, because I was just kind of uncomfortable with where things ended.  Not quite the pizzazz I was looking for, and I want to keep things moving.

Anyway, that’s for tomorrow, I guess.  But I didn’t do too badly, word-wise.

What I’m Reading:
Alternating between Operation Paperclip and The Pentagon’s Brain: An Uncensored History of DARPA, America’s Top-Secret Military Research Agency (also by Jacobsen).  Both fascinating reading and, yes, research for another book idea.

What I’m Watching:
Not a thing today.  Swam. I think I mentioned that I finished Fortitude.  Went back to catch up on The Blacklist.

What I’m Listening to:
I could listen to something.  I’ve got several good books on audio.  But I lose patience with the news.  I don’t have the brain power to spare right now.  Every second I’m not writing the book, I’m thinking about it.  Hard to turn that off.
