Showing

THE DAY

Not terrifically exciting, really.  As I said yesterday, I’ve been telling myself the story instead of truly writing/showing what’s going on, which meant that, today, I worked hard to show and not tell.  Showing is harder than you think because it’s so tempting to lapse into telling.  So, for me, I try to put my character in a situation immediately–and one that’s usually conflictual because, really, we wants to read about someone for whom everything is hunky-dory?–that will show his/her character, what the issues are — or at least hint at some.  It’s sort of about dropping people into someone’s life rather than leading them to it, if you catch my drift.

You would be amazed about how hard that is.

Had coffee with a friend this evening, who pointed out that since I’ve gone entirely off the rails with this book and into unknown territory (the husband still thinks I’m trying to do the book I outlined, and I’m not about to dissuade him because then I’ll just get a lecture that I don’t need right now), when I’m “telling,” I really am doing a half-assed kind of outlining, aren’t I?

I do love that she tried to make me feel better about this.

And, yes, major bloodletting today: as in the last, oh, four days worth of work shot to hell.  It is what it is.

What I’m Watching:
Creed.  Meh, not bad.  It’s also not great.  It is, in fact, like watching Rocky almost beat for beat, and I think the dialogue is much worse.  The love interest stuff does nothing for me.

What I’m Reading:
Heart-Shaped Box–and as good as this book is (and it’s really quite good), here’s the thing: Hill does an awful lot of telling.  He makes it work…but that’s what he does.

What I’m Listening to:
Nada.
