Hey, Samantha, thanks so much! I’m also so pleased–and touched–when people write in. We writers spend so much time in our own heads and alone, that we never really know if what we’re doing has any impact. It means a lot to me that you found stuff to love about the book as much as I loved penning this story. I also think that being “stuck” is fine because I want people to be a tad unsettled and uncertain because, in this case, there was very little black and white (as is the same for much of life). So if you’re still thinking about this book and its story and the implications–and you liked it–then my job is done :-)

  2. Kara says:

Have recently read ashes and really can’t wait for the next book to come out!!!!!!

  3. Ilsa says:

Super! And you know what? Me, too ;-)

  4. Emmalin says:

Hey Ilsa! I’ve e-mailed you before, but My name is Emmalin, I’m fifteen, and I live in the U.K.. Ok, so my brother’s mum kicked him out recently, and he hasn’t had access to any of his own books, and in any case, he doesn’t like reading, because he loses the thread of the plot after about a week. Anyhow, so I reccomended the book, and he finished it in 3 days! He absolutely loved it, and got upset when I told him he’d have to wait until his birthday in September for the next book. He actually did cry when he found out that the last one comes out NEXT YEAR! Love your books, Em and Mikey

  5. Ilsa says:

Oh, Emmalin, I remember you :-) . Now, how great is it that your brother read and LIKED the book, huh? That’s tremendous! I’m sorry that he got kicked out of his house, though. Will he be able to go back soon? In any event, give him some Kleenex and a hug from me, okay? Thanks, Em (and Mikey).

  6. Chloe says:

    Hi Isla,

I have replied previously before (in Feburary) when I read Ashes. I was just wondering if you had finished writing Monsters yet? and When exactly Shadows will be released?

Since its nearly August and it says Shadows will be out in September, do you know if there will be a longer time in Australia? (I live in Aus, and sometimes books come out several months later here than in UK or US… :( )

    Thanks! :)

    Chloe.

  7. Ilsa says:

Hey, Chloe! I remember you :-) I’m in the middle of writing MONSTERS. SHADOWS comes out here on 9/25 and in the UK 9/27. I’m afraid I have no information on the release date for Australia, though. I guess I had assumed it would be very close to the UK release since it’s in the Commonwealth, but . . . :

  8. Chloe says:

    Thank you! :)

I’m just going to try looking in some book shops for Shadows around the begginning of October.

Good luck with writing Monsters! Hope you keep getting some awesome inspiration for the last book in this trilogy :D

  9. Ilsa says:

    Thanks, Chloe! Fingers crossed ;-)

  10. Roya says:

Drowning Instinct, by far one of the best books I’ve read! The end made me cry! Can’t wait to read more :) .

  11. Ilsa says:

Me, too. :’-( And thanks :-)

  12. Neasa says:

Hey, Ilsa!! I just wanted to ask if you know if Shadows is out in Ireland and if it isn’t, do you know when it will??? My friend and I love your books and both want to be writers when we are older!!

    Your biggest fans,

    Neasa and Clemy!! :D

  13. Ilsa says:

    Hey, guys–and go, you! Writing’s a great job :-)
SHADOWS comes out on 9/27, so far as I know. I would presume that Ireland will have the same release as the UK, though I do know that other countries in the Commonwealth have various release dates. (For example, it’s already out in Germany . . . so, go figure O.o)
If you’re at all interested in other work, look for DROWNING INSTINCT, coming from Quercus in March, 2013. It’s a YA contemporary (very gritty) and quite different from the ASHES trilogy, though.
    Anyway, enjoy, guys! :-D

  14. Amber says:

    Hi Ilsa :)
I’m 14 and from the UK. Last year I read your book ashes and fell in love with the plot and the characters (Ellie is so cute ^^). Anyway, when I found out Shadows was going to be on the shelves on the 27th I was really exicted as my Birthday is on the 20th and I decided to get it as a present to myself :) I cant wait to read it and am counting down the days to go :)
    Amber

  15. Ilsa says:

    Hey, Amber!
    First, Happy Belated Birthday!
Second, if you’ve not read ASHES in a bit, pop over to my webpage and read “SO YOU READ ASHES A YEAR AGO,” if you think you need a refresher. (You sound like you don’t, but just in case…) SHADOWS hits the ground running, with no recap, and it’s a WAY bigger story, more characters. Okay?

    Enjoy, my dear :-)

  16. Keisha Ann says:

I read Ashes last year in my college lit course and I could not wait for Shadows to come out. I just got it in the mail today and I suspect I will be done with it this weekend. I can not wait to see what happens.

  17. Ilsa says:

Well, thanks, Keisha. I hope you like it. As always, I remind folks that SHADOWS doesn’t pull punches, so if you need a recap, see the SO YOU READ ASHES page on this site. You won’t get a recap in the book . .. just more stories ;-)

  18. AlexC says:

    Hi Ilsa!
I read Ashes last week (20 hours) and just finished Shadows(oh about a minute ago) I can’t wait for Monsters! I know Shadows just released buuut any ideas on when Monsters will come? I want to knwhen to start bugging my bookstore!
    Alex

  19. Ilsa says:

Hey, Alex . . . wait . . . do you know, you have the most fabulous name? ;-)
Anyway, glad you liked the book. MONSTERS will appear in fall, 2013.

    So…~hang on~…

  20. Allysha says:

    Hey Ilsa!
Wow, i absolutely loved Ashes :) Its the most amazing book i have ever read and i cannot get enough of it!
I am currently on Shadows, a few chapters away from the end and oh my gosh its great! I cant put it down!
I know that you have the third book coming out soon, but i was wondering if you were planning on doing a fourth and fifth? If so when do you expect them to be coming out?
    Thank you!!
    Allysha x

  21. Ilsa says:

Hey, Allysha, great to hear that you like the books! Unfortunately, MONSTERS is the last book; it IS a trilogy, after all ;-) , and will hill shelves Fall, 2013.

  22. Samina says:

Hi. I love your books! I just couldn’t put it down!
i’m from the uk and i just want to know when monsters is coming out. on my iPod when I go on amazon it says that its coming out in February but on my computer it doesn’t say when its going to be released. i just can’t wait for it to be released and i would love to know when to look out for it.

Also i just want you to know that the book grabbed me from the first page, and thats saying something. usually after i have read a book i automatically don’t like the next book i read because its not the book i read before. but Ashes totally changed that!

    thanks.

  23. Ilsa says:

Hey, Samina! Well, that is just too cool! I LOVE that you love the books because I aim to please and how great is it that you liked SHADOWS, too? I know what you mean about second books; somehow or other, you kind of want to revisit the great times you had before, know what I’m saying? But I really did have a much larger story than Alex’s in mind when I started, and she can’t be everywhere so I’m really glad that you’re enjoying where that world is taking you.

Yeah, I know the Amazon site is confused. MONSTERS won’t be out until the fall of 2013, so you’ll just have to ~~suffer~~ until then ;-) The next book I have coming out is THE SIN-EATER’S CONFESSION, and that will be in March.

    Thanks for getting in touch!

  24. Allie says:

    Hi Ilsa,

I just finished Shadows, & I loved it! I was just wondering, what month of this year does Monsters come out in Australia?

Also, are there any other books going to be in the series or is Monsters going to be the last one?

Thank you, you are such an awesome writer!

  25. Lisa says:

Hi! I love your books! Ive read Ashes & shadows & I just bought a book by you called Drowning instinct. It sounded really good, but I was just wondering if its a novel or the beginning of a series?

  26. Ilsa says:

Hi back, Lisa :-) Glad to hear you like the ASHES trilogy so far. Like DRAW THE DARK and the upcoming THE SIN-EATER’S CONFESSION, DROWNING INSTINCT is a standalone. My next series will begin in Fall, 2014 with WHITE SPACE.
    Enjoy!

  27. Ilsa says:

Well, Allie, that’s just great! MONSTERS will come out in September of this year, and that will be it for the trilogy.
You are very welcome. I hope you find the time to enjoy some of my other books, too. Thanks for getting in touch!

  28. sera says:

hey I just wanted to say that I really liked “drowning instinct”, the tragedy makes my heart break ! isit possible for there to be a sequel or something? :)

  29. Ilsa says:

Hey, Sera, I’m glad to hear it. I’m rather partial to that book myself ;-)
But, no, the only sequel will be whatever you think happens next :-)

  30. Katelyn says:

    Hey Ilsa!

  31. Katelyn says:

    Hey Ilsa!
I’ve recently read your book, Draw the Dark, and it is such a great book!!! I’m looking into reading more of your books now. A lot of your books seem really interesting, especially Drowning Instinct. :)

  32. Ilsa says:

Well, that’s so cool, Katelyn. I’m glad you liked the book. DROWNING is quite different, of course–but, then again, I think while all my books share some elements in common, they’re also very much their own thing. Enjoy!

  33. Nanouk says:

    Hi Ilsa!

Just gotta say: Just finished reading Shadows (it’s 1 am in the Netherlands right now, I should be sleeping ;) ) AND IT WAS SO AWESOME! September can’t just come fast enough, really excited for Monsters! Just wanted to tell you, that while I was reading Ashes and Shadows, I updated my younger sister about the book, she’s not as good in English as I am ;) SHE LOVES IT! Every morning she askes me: WHAT HAPPENED, TELL ME!? Technically, I’m almost translating the whole story ;) haha, so yeah, we’re big fans!

    Please never stop writing!

    Love, Nanouk

  34. Ilsa says:

Why, thank you, Nanouk! Thrilled that you both like the books, and I’m pleased to have contributed to your sleep deprivation ;-)
    Now…go take a nap.

  35. Nikki says:

LOve Love Love your books and am dying slowly waiting for the last Ashes book ;) . BTW why do covers sometimes change after the second book?

  36. Ilsa says:

Hey, glad to hear it! The cover changed because the book was so dark, it was getting lost on store shelves. People just didn’t see it, so the publisher changed the design to something with colors to make the book *pop* a bit more.
Don’t die. You have to stick around for the third book ;-)

  37. Hope says:

Hey Ilsa! I’m excited for Monsters to come out! Won’t be until about, 6 months though. :’(

  38. Ilsa says:

Good things come to those who wait, Hope :-)

  39. Emilee says:

When will Monsters the next book in the ashes trilogy be out ?

  40. Ilsa says:

    September 10, I believe :-)

  41. Jacqueline says:

Hello Ilsa! I just finished reading Drowning Instinct i have to say that book was amazing. I loved it. I didn’t want to stop reading, but then when it finished I was so upset. Maybe a sequel?

  42. Ilsa says:

Hey, Jacqueline, so glad you liked it! When I finished? I was upset, too ;-)

No, no sequel, I’m afraid. But I take you wanting one as a true compliment :-)

  43. Kaitlynn says:

I just read Ashes, it’s amazing, I’m going to have to pillage bookstores till I find Shadows. I hope it’s just as amazing as the first. :)

  44. Ilsa says:

Well, thanks! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Hope you find SHADOWS soon (or you can always order it, or have your library do the same). It’s a bigger, more complex book than ASHES, with a much broader story (multiple points of view, stuff like that). ASHES had just so many interesting stories (and characters) that I had to give folks their chance in the sun ;-) .

  45. Ilsa says:

Hey, Jacqueline, I’m so glad you liked it, but no . . . no sequel for that one. Just savor what is ;-)
