SHADOWS, Revealed! . . . er . . . almost

I am cursed, and here’s why.

I have this habit of falling in love with shows that last only one season or, sometimes, two. We’re talking series like My Own Worst Enemy in which a deliciously diabolical Christian Slater took Jekyll and Hyde to new levels;

that last episode of Stargate Universe when everyone, except Eli, goes into hibernation for a three-year voyage which we all know will never end;

or the series finale for Stargate Atlantis which, while getting our heroes back to Earth after a five-year jaunt in the Pegasus galaxy, left them marooned and cloaked in San Francisco Bay;

or, most recently, The River, which, last time I looked, is likely headed to the cancellation graveyard with one mystery solved but the Magus’s crew forever trapped in a no-exit jungle whose landscape has changed around them. (And was it just me, or did that show finally find its legs when Bruce Greenwood showed up?)

I could go on, but you get the picture. There I am, invested in a show. I care about these people. The show’s dug in its claws the way all good stories do–and then it–and I–get pushed to the edge of that cliff where we’re left, dangling, forever.

And ever . . .

And ever . . .

The same could be said for books that leave you gasping, hanging on by your fingernails, screaming–just like Buzz:

REM got it right. The premature end of a great show feels kinda the same (for me, anyway):

Well, ASHES fans, I’m happy to report that no such dastardly fate awaits you. Your wait is half over. SHADOWS is set to hit shelves on 9/25/12 and, to celebrate, the wonderful folks at Mundie Moms (home base for Cassandra Clare fans everywhere) are hosting a fantabulous cover reveal party on APRIL 1 (no foolin’). You’ll be treated to the FIRST EVER glimpse at the new look for the series, including a peek at the cover for SHADOWS.

In this week’s lead-up, I’ll also be taking your questions and posing a few of my own on Twitter (@ilsajbick) and Facebook. Have ideas about a movie version? An actress you think would be the perfect Alex? Or maybe you’ve thought ahead and wondered just what the heck happens next? Always wanted to have a good rant at the way I left you in a lurch? Here’s your chance, kiddo.

Oh, and did I mention prizes? Things like an ASHES survival pack? Signed copies of the novel? Your chance to win one of ONLY two SHADOWS ARCs up for grabs for this special event?

So, visit Mundie Moms on April 1, 2012, chat with other fans attending the reveal party, and join in the fun!

  1. For this event, I’m afraid so, yes. If you want to get your hands on a review copy, you’ll have to go through the powers that be at Egmont (kind of like NetGalley, I guess): either Deb Shapiro (deb@debshapiroandcompany) or Mary Albi (maryalbi@egmont.com).

    OTOH, you MIGHT win 😉

  2. Just finished reading ashes… Woman you mean! 😛 Its like you gave me a cup cake an then just TOOK IT AWAY! Bet your evil side has such a giggle knowing when anyone gets to the end there eyes burst into flames with rage 😀
    Got to admit, it gave me much pleasure watching my mums mini heart attack when she turned over the last page to realise there was nothing on the other side

  3. LOL!! Well, the image of your mother’s mini-heart attack definitely makes this all worthwhile 🙂 Glad you guys liked the book! Don’t forget that there’s the SHADOWS cover reveal on Mundie Moms blog tomorrow, and then if your mom lives until September, she’ll be able to read the next installment 😉

  4. I have to say I love your writing style! It seems so realistic and it just comes to life. I have already pre-ordered Shadows mainly because I loved Ashes, however like my Aunt most of my friends couldn’t stomach the book. Well besides my friend Elle… Oh Elle… I mean, er- You didn’t read that! So hurry up and finish Shadows! Wait no… Don’t rush it, just make it come out soon. Okay? Good. ^o^

  5. Oh, Dylan, your enthusiasm just bubbles off the page. Thanks so much. Never fear: I will let no book out before it’s truly done 😉

  6. Ilsa, I haven’t been on your website for awhile and I apologize about that, and I’m going in order reading your old posts and I just had to write you a quick comment after reading above. You watched The River as well? I had never heard of it and while browsing the DVD section at walmart, the cover caught my eye and the back sounded really cool. The show is awesome, I definetly agree about Bruce. I love the setting and its really endless what they could come up with for plot and everything, seeing as its “undiscovered” I hope they don’t cancel the show, I need to know more!! Oh and in case you were wondering why I, a stranger, am talking to you like we are old friends…I wrote to you once quite awhile back on one of your posts, just telling you how much I loved the book and that I live right around the area Ashes is set and how real it sounded and felt…anyway, you did respond back to me and I remember thinking how cool that was, that you actually took time out of your probably very busy day to write me back and…jeesh just rambling now. Thanks again for writing me back, that really made my day! 🙂

  7. Oh, Bruce Greenwood is such an underrated actor. He really made that show (I’m sorry; Lincoln was one amazingly annoying protag), and I loved the episode, right before the medical compound, that primarily focused on him. Have you seen him in THE RIVERMAN? Very good as well, and–of course–if you haven’t seen BELOW . . . run out to your nearest Blockbuster. He also did a show with Naomi Watts about fifteen years ago: DREAMWALKERS. Also, quite good. Also cancelled, and I never did get to see the last few episodes (and can’t find them on DVD anywhere). I swear . . .

    I just posted a review of AWAKE (NBC), too. Of course, it was fabulous. Of course, it’s been cancelled.

    Honestly, if you’re an actor and you want your show to stay on the air? Don’t let me watch it.

  8. Just wanted to tell you this has been my favorite dystopian, hands down (and I’ve read them ALL). I NEVER re-read first books in a series, but I can’t wait to re-read next month just before Shadows comes out! Growing up on Stephen King and loving The Stand to literal shreds, this one is right up there.

    Keep writing! Please!

  9. Well, thanks, Tracy! I’m flattered since King is simply fabulous [most of them 😉 ]. I do hope you like SHADOWS. If you don’t . . . say nothing 😉
